"Better than I deserve"

My wife and I went to dinner last Saturday night to celebrate Valentine's Day.

“How you doing?” I asked the waiter as we sat down. The waiter, who was crouching uncomfortably close to our table in an effort to get closer to us replied, “Better than I deserve!”

Just what does that mean I wondered out loud?  Anyway, this guy knew all the tricks.  He was the kind who takes the order without writing anything down.  Yep, one of those!  We’re changing everything and he’s just smiling ear-to-ear – apparently engaged in some mental mind game designed to remember our order.

Unfortunately, everything came out wrong.  He blamed the kitchen and everyone else for the mistakes but we wondered - if he had taken some notes, maybe everything would have come out correctly.

It got me thinking.  Many salespeople and service providers have a ton of shtick.  More style than substance - if you catch my drift.  Providing great service and doing a good job for your customers isn’t rocket science.  It’s having an idea of what needs to be done and doing it without a ton of pomp and circumstance.

Actions like:

·      Being on time

·      Being prepared

·      Being polite

·      Being aware of your customer’s needs

·      Being friendly

·      Being trustworthy

·      Being informative

·      Being interested in your customers.  Not patronizing – but genuinely interested

Great service isn’t saying something fancy like I’m better than I deserve, it’s treating your customers better than they deserve.
